Big Agnes Q core insulated

Anyone have any knowledge od these? My quest continues for a good nights kip. The Exped Down mat makes my shoulder and hip sore after a few days, so needless to say after my week home in NW Highlands i'm feeling a bit crook :(

Thoughts or views anyone?

I get sore hips and knees through the night on my Neoair. Letting a bit of air out helps. I do wonder if theres an airmat out there that wouldn't cause this discomfort.

I went to Leeds festival last year and done 3 nights on Tesco £6 self inflating mat. Didn't have a single niggle!

Letting air out for me helps but not helping enough. Even at home I'm constantly out the look out for a better nights sleep! Just wish there was an easier way:)

Hi Nevis, I slept on the Big Agnes AXL wide rectangular for three weeks in France this summer. I think it has the same quilted construction although I can't quite tell. The Q-Core talks about off set i-beams and the AXL doesn't mention these but they look similar, both with that quilty top. I think the q-core makes bigger insulation claims than the AXL. I'm a restless side sleeper with often sore hips. Anyway, for what it's worth, my experience of the AXL was:
  • Really luxuriously comfortable, with raised edges keeping me centred. I kept it pumped quite hard.
  • surprisingly squeaky when moving about.
  • insulation rubbish. not enough for over 2000m in French August. I had to pick up a silver foam windscreen protector.
  • Because the mat is so huge I carried the pump sack - extra 60g - but used it as quilt stuff sack. The Big Agnes valve is a bit weird, you have to put your mouth to it rather than around it (as in a Thermarest or Klymit), embouchure, embouchure.

Thanks for that Clare. i might take a punt on a Q core and see what’s what. It’s really difficult to choose when you can’t try one before hand.

ive recently bought a axl insulated its saving me over 100g on my etherlight for similar r rating and just as comfy. the only trouble I'm having is finding an adaptor to fit on my schnozzel bag for fast inflation. internal dia is roughly 28mm

I swapped my NeoAir for an AXL Air regular mummy this summer. Thicker than the NeoAir and lighter. I toss and turn a lot and usually end up on my side, I inflate quite hard, then when I'm settled, let a bit of the air out. Very comfy compared to the NeoAir.

Try seeing if the neck of a typical soda bottle fits, they're 28mm, you may have to file the threads off but worth a go.

Ok found a vid a few years with a guy using a cork and shopping bag. You snip the corner off a plastic bag and place a cork with a hole drilled in it half way through the hole and tie with a cable tie. You inflate the bag like a pump sack and press the cork into the mat valve and squeeze the bag :)
