Hammock users?

image.jpg Greetings.

Anyone out there use a hammock for overnight accommodation?

I've just bought one (cheap) to try out. As my local area has so much tree coverage it'd be criminal not to try it out.
It can be used as I bivi as well.
I've done a lot of local walking and sometimes finding a good pitch for a shelter/tent is hard unless you head to the high tops.

Thanks.

I've been using one regularly for getting on ten years now, if there's trees on the route then it gets packed every time :)

Seem to tick all the boxes for me.

Looks like I'm going to get 10 days to myself in May so was going to go a low level wander. Plenty of trees en route.
I'd still like the Bivi/Hammock option but they are heavier than the normal hammock. The UL tarp from DD looks good with the updated travel hammock.

Looking forward to testing it out. Pics are just from a trial set up the other night.

The original DD Travel your using was my first hammock I ever bought after making horrible knotted SAS style hammocks. It's seen quite a few nights as bathtub bug net, works well if you can stop abrasion on the bottom. ;) Woke up in a lake years ago in it. Good to see you using the shoelace knot, its the best for those tapes.

I'm less overnight, more overlife now. (Rich, where is the hammock emoticon???;))

Was my first as well.

Just hope nobody here made same mistake I did and not bother to mod the straps with a crab to stop water wicking in. Waking up at 2am in a waterproof hammock full of water is not pleasant at all, especially in a down bag. One of the most miserable nights I have ever had :(

I struggled to find the exact model. But it has the finer mesh with the Velcro tabs to hold a mat/under blanket between the layers. Has the zip on one side only.
I'll need to look into the carabina mod with the original webbing. I've ordered some elastic cord so the net spreader can be attached to ridge line instead of its own line. Just need to make it usable for my trial.
Got a Exped UL7 (small) hopefully it'll slide in between the layers.

You were unlucky, that's some serious rain to do that. I used to use drip lines on the old DD strapping, it stopped that happening. They do soak up some water though! I bivvy in it on Kinder in a storm, woke up with a torrent of floodwater running in between the layers, gotta be one of my worst nights too.

Burrow 20 long wide in multicam , with the max overfill for laughs

You did good there mate, good choice on the overfill.

It will, very 'tippy' with a 50cm wide mat though and you'll get cold shoulders with it in the hammock. 65cm only just big enough for me to stay on the mat. Have a look at "Segmented Pad Extenders". ;)

It was absolutely chucking it down bud. Felt bloody awful next day after no sleep and being soaked and stressed over thinking my sleeping bag was ruined. Suffice to say next time I was out I made sure I had modded my suspension with straps/whoppies. Not long after that I got a Blackbird.

Been years since i tried a hammock and i do keep searching every now and then, as i get the urge to try them again.

Good to know there are some hammockers here to put me right when i do eventually pull me finger out and decide to buy one

Pretty sure i'd get on with a Bridge Hammock best, i'm guessing if it had a footbox it'd be even better, but that's a bit of a financial investment for something that i might not like.

Is it worth trying something cheaper like say a DD hammock first?

You won't find a bridge with footbox Mark, your feet are already level in a bridge so they're not needed, but they do work really well on a gathered end hammock.

As a full time hanger , I did some experiments in Jan with footboxes and slept in them for a month. All were adjustable footboxes with different mounting points. After 3 weeks of playing with different shapes, went back to a non-adjustable gathered and whipped end hammock-just a single layer of Pertex 4/cotton/ripstop. As flat as needed, feet and head are 50mm higher than midriff.

I've got around 20 hammocks, the DD Travel is still comfy but is a little narrow using the bug net.

I now have three, or is it four. I keep trying them but I don't know if I'm fully convinced as yet. My problem is I Never get more than two nights in one, so I'm still sorting out how to set it up the best way for me.

I'm a hammock convert too. Just went out to play setting up the kit today in the woods, and I can tell I am going to like this! Other than trying to use my synmat UL7 as under insulation, but I know that aint going to work.

The gear I have is a Hammock gear CF3 tarp with doors in Camo Cuben,
warbonnet 1.1 single layer hammock, and on the way from the states a 45" Enlightened Equip 20'F Prospect UQ, with 20d outer, I went synthetic over down due to our UK weather and the higher likelyhood of wet ground. My TQ is a Nunatuk Arc Specialist with 0.5oz overfill in footbox.

I also have some dutchgear being brought back from the states for me, I ordered extra. So once I have decided what I like out of the bits I picked, there may be some spare dutch hooks and/or tarp flies for anyone wanting to try.

And if you are really bored, I made a video of today
